What To Wear to First Communion: 5 Tips
While there’s no formal dress code for guests at First Communion, most outfits will fall into the dressy casual category.
Keeping that dress code in mind, here are five tips for what to wear.
1. When in Doubt, Dress Up
First Holy Communion is a special celebration for your child and your family, so it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.
What you should wear:
- Dresses or skirts that hit mid-thigh or longer
- Tops with a tasteful neckline
- Tops and dresses with sleeves or a sweater/shawl that covers your shoulders*
- Dressy pants and tops
- Dressy pumps, heels, or sandals
*NOTE: Covering your shoulders varies depending on the church and the priest. I’d wear at least sleeveless or very wide straps.

2. What To Avoid
Outfits should be respectful of the occasion and the church. If you can’t decide if an outfit is appropriate, it probably isn’t.
What you shouldn’t wear:
- Short dresses or skirts
- Ripped or frayed clothing
- Shorts
- Very tight clothing
- Revealing tops
- Sheer tops
- Sneakers or flip flops
- Denim
- Spaghetti straps or other necklines/straps that show a lot of skin
3. Don’t Wear All White
I don’t think there’s a “rule” against mothers or guests wearing white to First Communion like there is for weddings, but I think it’s best to avoid wearing all white or ivory since the girls will wear it. However, something like a floral dress with white as its base (like this one) is a great option.
Because First Communion is held in the spring, pastels, florals, or pops of color are all great options for this time of year.
I wore a navy blue dress to my daughter’s First Communion. While the dress was a darker color, the style and material was appropriate for spring and worked well with my husband’s suit.
4. Dress Like Yourself
While you need to dress appropriately for your child’s First Communion, you should also be comfortable so you enjoy your child’s special day.
You can wear trousers and a nice top if you don’t like wearing dresses or skirts. Your favorite dress with spaghetti straps can be appropriate if you wear a sweater over it. And there’s no need to wear heels if you don’t like them!

5. Dress for Pictures
Because you will be in photos with child, your family, and your friends, avoid any outfits that are flashy and will make you stand out. Consider wearing solid colors, neutrals, or muted prints that will complement other people in photos.
And remember that your child should be the center of attention. You want to look nice but not stand out.

I used to be the mom who bought her kids beautiful clothes for every special event and holiday, but didn’t spend any time finding herself an outfit she loved.

And sooner than the day before.
