Let’s talk about the best short hairstyle for thick hair. It’s conservative yet edgy, sassy yet sweet. Can you guess what it is?!
If my hair was a person, I’d say she’s had many identity crises over the years. I’ve changed my hair a lot while I’ve searched for the best short hairstyle for thick hair.
Or maybe it’s me who had the identity crisis? I think that’s a question for another day.
But ladies, I’ve finally found it, my holy grail of haircuts. The best short haircut for thick hair is…
The undercut.
Yup, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s longer on top, and cut short underneath.

Why the Normal Chin-length Bob Doesn’t Work
I’ve had various hairstyles over the years, but I keep coming back to variations of the chin-length bob. I don’t like the feel of hair on my shoulders or back, but I can’t go super short like a pixie because I have shoulders like a linebacker.
But the normal chin-length bob (before the undercut) is still so much work. I don’t actually have real thick hair but I have a lot of strands that make my hair look thick. The bob can be super poofy and my hair takes forever to dry.
Plus, I have an obnoxiously uneven hairline on my neck, which makes cutting my hair difficult. My hair stylist was so patient with me and really worked hard to cut my hair well. (The last time I was in the salon with my three-year-old son, she looked at him and said, “Caleb has your hairline!” I’m not sure that was a compliment. Haha.)
The Undercut

I seemed to spend a lot of time on Pinterest and Google looking at the best short haircuts for women. Then one day in early 2018, I ran across a photo of Scarlett Johansson from the 2015 MTV Movie Awards and I fell in love with her hair. Then I found more pictures and became obsessed with all the ways she styled her undercut.
I was sold.
But, much to my disappointment, I do not look like Scarlett Johansson, nor do I have a hair stylist doing my hair every day. After I cut my hair into the undercut, I didn’t really like it. I realized that the top layer was actually too short for my face and broad shoulders.
So I started to grow out the top layer, back to the chin-length bob. But I kept the undercut, and dare I say…
It’s perfect.
It takes half the time to dry because I have half the hair. I can even let my top layer air dry and it looks pretty good (although I still prefer using a blow dryer).
Before when I had a full head of hair, I couldn’t just let it air dry or it looked awful. Even after using a blow dryer, I still had to use a straightener to make my hair less poofy.
And my crazy uneven neck hairline? Gone. Well, it’s still there, but it gets cut tight to my neck and is easier for both me and my hair stylist.
Best Short Hairstyle for Thick Hair
Get ready for the compliments! I’ve never had so many people – including strangers – tell me how much they love my hair. Young and old, women and men. Everyone loves it.
When my hair is down, most people can’t even tell that I have an undercut because I still have so much hair on top. At my daughter’s kindergarten drop off one day, I had gone to the gym beforehand so I had my hair in a top knot on my head. One of the other moms was like, “Oh my gosh! I didn’t even realize you had your hair cut like that!” She went on to say that she used to be a hair stylist so she always notices women’s hair. And I fooled her!
Another thing I love about the bob-length undercut is that I can be conservative or edgy. Sweet or sassy. You know what they say about the mullet? Business in the front, party in the back? That’s my undercut: Business on the top, party on the bottom.
You can let it air dry for beachy waves, or you can curl it for a little more bounce. You can straighten it for a sleek look, or part it dramatically for an edgy look. There are SO many options with this haircut.
I also like that my haircut is different. I live in Orange County, Calif., where there are a lot of women sporting loose, blonde curls. I like that my hair is not that style.
I do occasionally get some strange looks when I have it up in a top knot. I’ve had my hair this way for so long now that I forget that strangers may never have seen this type of haircut on a woman.
