Boy was I wrong.

I wear that thing so much more than I thought I would. And in this blog post, I’ll share my five favorite ways to wear a sling bag.

5 Ways to Wear a Sling Bag

1. Across Your Chest/Back

You’ll most likely see women wearing sling bags across their chest or back. Wearing the bag in front of your body offers more security for your belongings, especially if you’re traveling overseas.

I like wearing my bag across my back when I’m using my arms more because it doesn’t restrict my movement.

2. Around Your Waist

I wear my sling bag around my waist when I’m wearing a backpack or a bulky jacket so the sling bag doesn’t get in the way. I also prefer to wear it this way when we go to an amusement park or an outdoor event.

3. On Your Shoulder

Sling bags are easy to throw on your shoulder like a regular handbag. I’ll often wear it this way if I’m not going to have it on for long.

4. As a Long Crossbody

I will sometimes lengthen the strap on my sling bag to wear it lower on my hip like a traditional crossbody bag.

5. As a Clutch/Wristlet

If your sling bag has a removable strap, you can wear it as a clutch for a night out on the town.

Types of Sling Bags

Traditional Sling Bag

Although used interchangeably, a sling bag is not actually the same thing as a belt bag. The straps on a traditional sling bag come out of the bag from the top and the bottom, while the straps on a belt bag come out of the bag’s sides.

Belt Bag

Belt bags – or fanny packs as we called them growing up – are meant to be worn around your waist, but are most often seen worn across the chest or back.

Crossbody

Some crossbody purses have straps that can be shortened enough that they function as a sling bag.
