Need a face moisturizer that helps balance oil production on your oily skin? How about one that’s non toxic and affordable, too? Then keep reading this Beauty By Earth review of the Oil Control Face Moisturizer!
My face is O-I-L-Y with a capital “O,” and many skincare products leave my skin even more greasy and shiny. So I’m always on the hunt for products to control my oily skin, and it’s even harder to find one with non toxic ingredients.
I often feel left out in the clean beauty world because it seems like so many moisturizers are formulated for dry skin and to give people “glowing” skin. I don’t need any help creating a dewy finish; my face does that just fine on its own.
But I also don’t want to use products that completely suck my skin dry of its natural moisture because then my skin will produce more oil. And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that having oily skin isn’t a bad thing.
People with oily skin tend to have thicker skin, which means they also tend to have fewer wrinkles. I’ve also noticed that as my face starts to produce some oil during the day, the oil blends out my foundation more evenly and fills in my fine lines.
The key is finding the right balance of oil production.
That’s why I was excited to try Beauty By Earth’s Oil Control Face Moisturizer, a product designed to moisturize without feeling greasy. (Beauty By Earth gave me this product to try. This review is my honest opinion of the product.)
But does it work? Keep reading to find out!

Is the company Beauty By Earth good?
Before we look at the moisturizer, let’s take a general look at Beauty By Earth.
1. Non Toxic Ingredients
Beauty By Earth’s products are made without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, triclosan, petroleum, phenoxyethanol, and synthetic colors and fragrances. They are also gluten-free and GMO-free.
Finding natural skin care products that are effective and affordable can be a challenge. Other comparable products can be significantly more expensive, sometimes double or triple the price of Beauty By Earth’s products.
Beauty By Earth is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, which means the products are not tested on animals. Most of the products are vegan, except for a few that use beeswax, like the lip balm.
4. Made in the USA
All of Beauty By Earth’s formulations (i.e., the creams, oils, and liquids in the products) are made in the United States. They source some materials from abroad for things like packaging or tools, like the jade for the roller and gua sha.
5. Money-Back Guarantee
If you’re not satisfied with a product for ANY reason, you can return it within 30 days and Beauty By Earth will refund the original purchase price. (Shipping charges and gift cards are non-refundable.)
My Beauty By Earth Review: Oil Control Face Moisturizer
Finally a product that works to balance my oily skin! I really like the Beauty By Earth Oil Control Face Moisturizer. It significantly reduces how soon my face gets oily and how many times I have to blot my skin during the day. Yes, my face still gets oily, but not nearly as much as it does when I use other products.
Here are two photos that show my skin right after applying makeup, and then eight hours later with no blotting or touch ups. With other moisturizers, my T-Zone would look like the second photo after only two or three hours. (I wish that I had a control photo showing what my skin looked like after eight hours of wearing other moisturizers. But I didn’t take one before I started using this product. Sorry!)
Lightweight and non-greasy. This is an incredibly lightweight moisturizer. It rubs in very smoothly and easily with no greasy film.
Only need a small amount. Don’t be fooled by the size of the tube because a little goes a long way! You don’t need much, and Beauty By Earth recommends ordering a new tube every 2-3 months.
Makes a great makeup primer for oily skin. Beauty By Earth’s Oil Control Moisturizer creates a smooth base for my favorite matte liquid foundation.
May not work for combo skin. If you have combination skin, this moisturizer may not provide enough hydration for the dry areas of your face. You’ll have to try it to see.
How To Use
Instructions: Wash your face and pat dry. After applying toner or serum, apply a small amount of the Beauty By Earth Oil Control Moisturizer to your fingertips and massage into your face and neck. Allow it to absorb completely before applying sunscreen or makeup. For best results, use every morning and evening.
How I use it: I wash my face with a gentle facial soap, spritz on toner, and then apply this moisturizer. I initially only used it in the morning, but I saw better results when I started using it in the evening, too.
Below is another morning vs. evening comparison. There’s an eight-hour difference between these two photos (no blotting or touch ups).
Ingredients in the Oil Control Face Moisturizer
If you’re someone who checks the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep ratings, you’ll see that the Beauty By Earth Oil Control Face Moisturizer is rated a 3, which is at the low end of the moderate hazard range. (The EWG’s ratings are from 1 to 10, with one being the best and 10 being the worst.)
Almost all of the ingredients are rated a 1-2, except for Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil and Organic Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, which are rated a 4 and a 5, respectively.
Why? Let’s take a look at each one.
Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Essential Oil. Peppermint oil can irritate and sensitize skin, and can increase the penetration of other ingredients. However, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded in a June 2018 report that Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil is “safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration described in the safety assessment when formulated to be non-sensitizing.” According to Beauty By Earth, there’s less than 0.5 percent of peppermint essential oil in the Oil Control Face Moisturizer.
Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract. Generally speaking, the concern about the safety of licorice root extract has to do with the consumption of it, rather than its topical use. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded in a September 2008 report that Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root is “safe as cosmetic ingredients in the practices of use and concentration given in this safety assessment.” The Panel also concluded that it’s unlikely that licorice extracts will significantly penetrate the skin. According to Beauty By Earth, there’s less than 0.5 percent of licorice root extract in the Oil Control Moisturizer.
Based on my research, I feel safe using this product on my skin. As always, if you have any concerns about this or any other product, you should ask your medical provider.

Other Beauty By Earth Products To Try
After researching the company and testing out this moisturizer, I want to try out more Beauty By Earth products! Here are some that I’m eyeing, but you should also take a look at all of their highly-rated products.
I’ve never used a self tanner but this one has me seriously considering it. (You can also buy these products individually.)
If you’re addicted to Burt’s Bees lip balm like I used to be, Beauty By Earth’s Organic Peppermint Lip Balm has way better ingredients for about the same price. These lip balms don’t contain lanolin, soybean oil, or canola oil like Burt’s Bees lip balms do.
My kids love taking baths, but other bath bombs are no bueno. Beauty By Earth bath bombs don’t contain any of the toxic ingredients you’ll find in the Lush bath bombs, like SLS, dyes, colorants, or artificial fragrance. Yuck!
My hair stylist has been telling me for a while now I should buy a sea salt spray. This one looks like a great choice!
I need more makeup remover! And this bottle is less than half the price of my favorite makeup cleansing oil.
