When you have broad shoulders that you want to downplay, the right hairstyle can make all the difference. Here are the best hairstyles for broad shoulders.
I wish I could go back in time and tell a younger me the best way to wear my hair so my shoulders don’t look so darn broad.
My go-to haircuts for years – worn down smooth and sleek, or pulled up in a tight ponytail – only emphasized my broad shoulders.
But now I know how to style my hair to draw attention away from my wide shoulders.

Best Hairstyles for Broad Shoulders
The best hairstyles for broad shoulders are ones with volume and texture that balance out your wide shoulders. Think messy beach hair, loose curls, and loose buns, braids, and ponytails.
While the best hair length for broad shoulders is medium length, you can make many lengths work with the right hairstyle. You can still de-emphasize your strong shoulders even if your hair is cut in a bob or hangs down your back.
As you can see, my hair is cut in a short bob, which most people recommend against. But it works for me because I have the right cut and style.
1. Messy Beach Hair
Grab some sea salt spray and channel your inner mermaid with messy beach hair. It’s one of my favorite ways to wear my hair because it doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s supposed to look wind-blown and tousled!
Sometimes if I’m heading out while my hair is still wet, I’ll even roll down the windows in my car to really get the wind-blown effect!
2. Loose Curls
I wish I was better (and faster!) at doing my hair because I love how loose curls look. Curls help balance wide shoulders on women, make a boyish figure more feminine, and are very on trend right now.
3. A-Line Bob or Lob
An A-line bob or lob is one of the best haircuts for broad shoulders because the longer front pieces draw the eye to the middle of your face and body.
Opt for an A-line bob or lob that is just slightly longer in front. They are chic haircuts for wide shoulders.

Hairstyles That Don’t Work Well for Broad Shoulders
Super Short
I love, love, love super short hairstyles like the pixie… on women with small frames.
I’m always tempted to chop off all of my hair (because I’m lazy and hate styling it), but I know it won’t give me the look I’m going for. I’ve had very short hair in the past and it doesn’t work well on me.
I want to look more feminine, and a super short haircut on my broad shoulders only highlights my boyish figure.
Slicked Back
Remember how I said earlier that a voluminous hairstyle minimizes broad shoulders? Well, a slicked back hairstyle is anything but voluminous!
Pulled Tight
Part of the reason why I cut my hair to a chin-length bob was because I was always pulling my hair back into a tight ponytail. That tight pony only made my big shoulders front and center.
If you want to pull your hair back into a ponytail or braid, make sure it’s loose and not tight.
Super Straight
When your hair is super straight, it doesn’t balance out the width of your shoulders.
Super Long
Super long hair ends up looking heavy and weighed down,
