It’s really hard to find shampoo for oily hair, much less one that’s non toxic. That’s why I’m so excited to share these three clean beauty brands that actually work!
Non toxic shampoo was the very first “clean beauty” product I tried on my oily hair and it was a big ole miserable FAIL. I went right back to my conventional hair care products and decided that green beauty didn’t work.
But a few years and a little more research later, I decided to give non toxic shampoo another go and I found some that actually work for my oily hair! I’m sharing my three favorite shampoo and conditioner duos so you don’t have to waste time and money trying different products.
But first, let’s talk about why should you even care about natural shampoo.

Why Use Non Toxic Shampoo?
Conventional shampoos contain sulfates, which are the ingredients that get your hair squeaky clean and produce the lather we expect. But sulfates are harsh ingredients that strip your hair and leave it dry and dull.
And no, that’s not actually what you need when you have oily hair! Just like with your face, you don’t want to use harsh cleansers that will remove too much oil or your skin will overcompensate and produce even more.
Sodium lauryl sulfate, a popular cleaning ingredient in shampoos, is a known skin irritant that can worsen skin problems like rosacea. It can also dry out your scalp, leading to – you guessed it – more oil.
Sodium laureth sulfate is a milder, gentler ingredient for cleaning and lathering, but the process to create this chemical can create 1,4-dioxane as a byproduct. And that’s a bad thing because the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) states that 1,4-dioxane can “cause irritation and is likely carcinogenic.”
You should be concerned about other ingredients in shampoos and conditioners, too, like phthalates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances.
How To Use Non Toxic Shampoo
If you’re switching to non toxic shampoo for the first time, here are some helpful tricks I learned the hard way.
- Your hair needs to be very wet, and you may need to shampoo twice.
- Your hair will produce more oil during your transition period.
- For long hair, try washing smaller sections of hair at a time.
